How to Create Your Own Custom iPhone Ringtones

So you finally got that iPhone that you’ve always been wanting and are checking out all of those cool features that the iPhone has to offer. The iPhone is definitely very feature-rich and has so much to offer to it’s users. However, with all of those nice features, you’re bound to run into the issue of having to pay for a song twice in order to get it as a ringtone, hence is why you’re reading this article.

With so many songs in your iPhone’s music library, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to create ringtones from them? Well, my answer to you is yes, it is nice and creating your own custom iPhone ringtones is completely legal. You can actually make ringtones from all of your non-DRM songs that you have in your iTunes library. The best thing about using this little technique is that it cost you absolutely nothing and can be done regardless of whether you’re using a Windows PC or a Mac.

So, without further adieu, let’s get our iPhones out and create ourselves some free ringtones.

1. The first step that you need to take is to open up iTunes on your computer, then find the song that you would like to make a ringtone out of.
2. Play the song and decide which part you would like to use for your ringtone.
3. When the song gets to your desired point, take note of the start-time as well as the end-time within the iTune’s player.
4. Move your mouse cursor over to your chosen song and right-click, scroll down and click “Get Info” from the sub-menu, then choose the “Options” tab.
5. Find where it says “Start Time” and enter the start time you chose from your song. The format of the start time is in minutes:seconds. For example, 1:53 would be the equivalent to one minute, fifty-three seconds.
6. Specify the end time in the text box next to “Stop Time” in the same format that you used for the start time, then click “Ok”. Note: Try to ensure that the start time and end time are no more than 40 seconds apart.
7. You’ll now need to convert your song to the correct format by right-clicking on your song and selecting “Convert Selection to AAC”. This step can take a moment so if you’re getting thirsty about now, go ahead and get your self a nice beverage.
8. Right-click on your ringtone and click “Delete”, then click on the “Keep Files” button.
9. You should now be able to locate your music file in your Documents -> Music -> iTunes -> iTunes Music folder. It should have an m4a extension.
10. Right-click on the m4a file and select rename. You should change the m4a extension to m4r. To rename the file on a Mac, right-click and select “Get Info”. Note: You may get a warning box requiring you to confirm that you would like to change the file-type. No worries, just click “Ok” to continue.
11. Double-clicking on the ringtone that you have just created will at the ringtone’s folder to your iTune’s Music Library where it can then be synced with your iPhone upon connecting your iPhone to your computer.
